Destination: The Annex Hotel, Toronto.
Stay Type: Overnight, Family Staycation.
Details: Boutique hotel, dog and kid friendly,
high-tech, self check-in/check-out, trendy location.
It’s pretty obvious around here that design and supporting local are of my most favourite things. Needless to say, I instantly fell in love with The Annex which lies at the intersection of aesthetic and true collaboration.
With my husband returning from a team road trip and having had an extra holiday Monday added to the weekend, we decided to make the most and opt for a little staycation at the shoot worthy location.
As mentioned in the previous quick facts above, the hotel is dog and kid friendly – with dogs 25 lbs and under welcomed to stay overnight and cribs available for even the youngest of children.
Almost everything from your check-in to your check-out, is very high tech and controlled by you. While the staff that are in fact present onsite are extremely personable, you can come and go without having to interact, wait on, or require the presence of anyone. Hello seamless arrival, goodbye kids running around the lobby and earning you cut eye from other guests.
Prior to your check-in time you will receive an entrance codes for both the building as well as for your room. The rest is up to you. (You should note that the hotel property includes a walk-up stairwell, with rooms on the second and third floors, food and drink on the first).
The rooms range from small queen, to large king, to large double queen beds for larger groups. Like that of a normal hotel, you can also expect to find a good sized coat closet, mini fridge, basic bathrooms needs like soaps and towels.
But this isn’t just a normal hotel though and being the trendy boutique environment that it is — toiletries get a Grown Alchemist upgrade, showers are walk-in rain showers, TVs are swapped for a Netflix equipped iPad and each room hosts a record player with a selection of vinyls sure to please all preferences. Each room offers large loft-like windows providing natural light galore, both privacy and black-out blinds, a built in work space and high quality bed linens.
If the cafe, wine bar, and restaurant that wait right at your fingertips aren’t enough — it’s ridiculously easy to step out into the buzzing Annex neighbourhood, full of unique offerings or take a short ride into the downtown core and it’s overflow of food, drinks, or entertainment.
We thoroughly enjoyed our stop in and cannot recommend the spot to anyone looking for something a little less standard and stuffy. If you have a taste for the well curated, or are a self-proclaimed aesthete then this is one Toronto accommodation you’ll most definitely want to save — perfect for experiencing the city up close and personal, reuniting with friends, celebratory nights, or a stress free staycation.
